More Than Just Flowers

A very quiet and somewhat shy man, Giles has discovered his green fingers and a passion for gardening.

Whilst he has attended Derventio Housing Trusts Growing Lives centre, he struggles with mixing with people and prefers a solitary life.

Therefore, he has brought Growing Lives to his accommodation and has come out of his shed, sorry shell, taking great pride in his newly discovered gardening skills.

Having been gifted a sunflower by another resident, Giles has tended to it with great care. In the garden, he has made a cane frame for the wildflowers to grow up, as he nurtures them to their full potential.

On every house visit Giles is especially keen to show Katie, his housing support officer the flowers progress as they begin to bloom; this is really helping with his recovery.

Giles says that he loves to see the greenery and the bees and insects they attract.

It’s been really rewarding to see the positive changes in his mental health and his confidence bloom.

Refugee Week 2026 (15th–21st June): Celebrating Courage

This year’s Refugee Week theme is “Courage”. It recognises not only the bravery it takes to flee conflict, persecution, or hardship, but also the strength needed to rebuild, adapt to new circumstances and find belonging in a new community.

Refugee Week reminds us that courage often shows up in everyday actions such as asking for help, making connections, and building a future with hope and determination.

This theme strongly resonates with the work of Derventio Housing Trust. Every day, we support people facing homelessness, social exclusion, and complex challenges. The individuals we work alongside demonstrate immense courage: the courage to leave unsafe situations, engage with support, rebuild confidence, and take the first steps towards independent living.

Just as Refugee Week highlights courage in people seeking safety, Derventio Housing Trust sees courage in many forms, whether it is helping and supporting residents to move into independent accommodation after a period of supported housing support, overcoming barriers to employment, addressing mental health challenges, or taking steps towards independence. Courage is not always dramatic; it can be as simple as accepting support, sharing your story, or believing that change is possible.

At Derventio Housing Trust, we see this every day. Whether overcoming homelessness, facing personal challenges, or taking steps towards independence, courage is often found in the small but powerful decisions that help people move forward. With the right support, compassion, and community, courage can create lasting change, brighter futures, and the foundation for people to thrive.
