Homelessness sadly is a constant in our society. For a complex variety of reasons homelessness around the centre of cities such as Derby is nothing new. In December 2025 Shelter estimated that at least 382,000 people were homeless in England.

In the latest edition of the 'Little Did You Know' series, Derbyshire Live takes an interesting, and somewhat light-hearted look at the Derby homeless man who was so well known his name became slang for tramp and recall the myths that built up around him.

Whilst regarded by many with fondness and a source of amusing anecdotes, the piece on Bocker Wright does illustrate misconceptions around homelessness and rough sleeping, and the often-devastating consequences of poor, untreated mental health and unchecked substance and alcohol use.

Whilst Bocker Wright and others in the article are illustrated almost as colourful local characters, intrinsic to the street scene and woven into our social history, there is no doubt that each must have suffered a terrible story and lived a life that many of us couldn’t even begin to imagine.

It is a sobering reality that in 2026 homelessness remains a significant, and growing issue within our communities. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. For more information on the causes of homelessness and what you can do to help, or if you find yourself in need of help, please contact us or visit our website.
The work of organisations such as Derventio Housing Trust is more than sticking plaster solutions. Together, we work to address the deeper, interlinked problems that push people into crisis.

This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we’re proud to highlight Leo, a resident of Derventio Housing Trust and participant at Growing Lives, who has shared the positive impact gardening has had on his mental health and confidence. 💚

When Leo first joined Growing Lives, his confidence was low. Today, he is a Peer Support Mentor, helping other residents by organising activities, growing vegetables, and cooking meals to share with others. 🥕🍽️

This week, Leo spoke to BBC Radio Derby about how Growing Lives has supported his mental wellbeing by providing routine, opportunities to be creative, and a calming space through gardening.

Leo said:
“Seeing people smile makes me smile.” 😊

Participants and staff at Growing Lives also took part in the #WearItGreen campaign by wearing green and baking a green cake to show support for Mental Health Awareness Week. 💚
Read Leo’s full story and learn more about how Growing Lives supported the Wear It Green campaign for Mental Health Awareness Week.
