Residents gain digital confidence through IT course
A group of Derventio Housing Trust residents have taken their first steps towards becoming more digitally confident, thanks to a course supported by Digital Support Derbyshire and delivered by Althaus Digital.
The training focused on building essential digital skills using mobile phones – the most accessible device for many participants. Sessions covered topics such as using email, browsing safely, creating documents and accessing online services through apps. Designed to be inclusive and hands-on, the course helped participants grow in confidence and discover just how much their phones could do.
Many of those taking part joined the sessions with little or no previous experience using IT, and some were nervous about ‘doing something wrong’ or ‘breaking’ their phones. With step-by-step guidance from Althaus Digital staff, participants soon began exploring new features and using their devices more independently.
By the end of the course, everyone was using their phones more effectively – and even helping each other troubleshoot and explore new apps.
One participant said:
I didn’t know my phone could do all this. Now I can apply for jobs and check my emails on my own.
Another added:
I used to only use my phone for calls. Now I’ve got apps for housing, jobs and even the NHS!
The sessions helped residents learn how to download and install apps safely, use job search sites like Indeed, access housing and council services, send and receive emails, navigate government and NHS apps, and use Google Maps to build confidence travelling independently.
Participants also learned about online safety, including how to spot scams and protect personal information.
All seven participants reported feeling more confident using their phones, with staff noting that the course helped break down barriers to digital inclusion by focusing on familiar tools that residents already owned.
The sociable group setting also helped people connect with others and learn together, reducing digital isolation and boosting social confidence.
Several residents have already expressed interest in continuing their digital learning journey, including using tablets or computers in the future.
The course made me feel less scared of technology. I’m not afraid to try things now.
Derventio Housing Trust would like to thank Digital Support Derbyshire for funding this valuable opportunity and Althaus Digital for delivering such engaging and empowering sessions.
