Building Better Opportunities - Opportunity and Change
As part of the national Building Better Opportunities programme, Derventio Housing Trust is working with people in Derbyshire who face multiple challenges and barriers in their life. Building Better Opportunities is funded by the European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund.
The programme brings opportunities to people who are furthest from the labour market – opening up doors for training, volunteering and employment in their local area.
We are part of the D2N2 (Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire) partnership. We deliver the support in Amber Valley, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, Derby City, South Derbyshire, High Peak and Eastwood. We have supported over 70 participants over the three year programme with the aim to support a further 220 as part of the two year programme extension.
What we offer
One-to-one advice and mentoring
A Personal Navigator spends time with each person helping them to address and resolve their complex issues, and to talk about what’s preventing them from getting a job. The Navigator will provide personalised advice and support.
“The programme has given me lots of confidence in myself on the inside and out.”
Links to other support
We will help people to access other services that could help them – for example specialist training in healthy living, money matters, housing and employability.
“It has helped me a lot with my mental illness and encouraged me to go for counselling which I have put off for years.”
Each person can apply to the Discretionary Fund for things that will help them tackle their barriers to moving forward. They can spend it on things like travel costs, training, equipment or clothes.
Access to work and training
We have links with a wide range of local employers who can offer people training, work placements, volunteering or help to secure a job.
“I have tried new things, started volunteering. I’m gaining work experience; I’ve gained my food hygiene certificate and met new people.”
