New friendships and better cooking skills through lunch club
22 Oct 2018
A new lunch club will give people in Ilkeston cooking skills and the chance to enjoy nutritious meals as part of the Growing Lives project run by Derventio Housing Trust.
Growing Lives is a friendly learning project for people who need a skills and confidence boost. Based in a former factory in Cotmanhay, there are plenty of things for people to get involved in, from arts & crafts to bicycle maintenance and gardening.
The project has now had a boost of its own with a grant from Postcode Community Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People's Postcode Lottery.
Postcode Community Trust awarded £2,000 for the Growing Lives Lunch Club so that people can enjoy a healthy, nutritious lunch in between the day's activities. Participants will learn to cook different meals using produce from the Growing Lives garden and fresh eggs from the resident hens. The grant from Postcode Community Trust will pay for staff time and additional ingredients.
Sarah Hernandez, Managing Director of Derventio Housing Trust said: "The focus will be on creating healthy, nutritious meals on a budget. It will help people facing health and income inequalities to make healthier lifestyle choices. It will also promote team work and help people to develop friendships. For many this will have a wider impact on their lives, leading to better confidence and wellbeing. I would like to thank Postcode Community Trust for supporting the project with this grant."
