Free photography exhibition at Ilkeston Community Hospital

Free photography exhibition

A free photography exhibition featuring photos taken by Growing Lives participants is on display at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

The photographs were taken in and around Ilkeston and Derby over the summer as part of a project called Change the Picture. It was delivered in partnership with QUAD and their ‘Creative Wellbeing’ programme which provides opportunities for engagement in cultural activities that support inclusion and encourage people to take control of their own personal, emotional and social pathways.

The project took homeless people through a six week course to learn photography techniques. Photographer Jon Legge taught participants technical skills and showed how the camera can be used as a powerful tool to document and share personal experiences.

The exhibition is on display at Ilkeston Community Hospital until Monday 7 March, when it will be moved to the London Road Community Hospital from Monday 14 March.

“This project gave a much-needed skills and confidence boost to the 12 people who took part in the project”, said Derventio’s Managing Director Sarah Hernandez.

“We hope that displaying the photographs in a public exhibition will help to challenge stereotypes and raise awareness of homelessness in the local area”.

The project was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
